The new World Headquarters of Norway‘s telecommunications giant is a powerful expression of the company‘s vision to design the foremost creative working environment in Scandinavia. The idea to consolidate 7,700 employees at 6,000 workstations under eight roofs and atriums transforms the way in which Telenor conducts business, unifying the company, encouraging collaboration, and attracting the best employees in the industry. The branching nature of the complex fosters increased communication, sensitivity to the environment, and employee well-being. Nestled unobtrusively into the open landscape of an old runway at the former Oslo International Airport, eight office wings branch out along the runway‘s east-west axis and are joined horizontally by two curved boulevards that embrace a central plaza.
A concept dubbed ‘office of the future‘ brings the project‘s massive scale to a personal level. Offices are organised into working units of approximately 30 people, arranged individually or in modules of two or three units, configured to maximise workplace flexibility, natural lighting, and views of Oslofjord. An open floor plan, casual meeting places, and social amenities facilitate the exchange of ideas. Hot desks, laptop computers, and mobile devices provide utmost flexibility. An aggressive ‘green‘ agenda includes the use of water from the fjord as a heat exchanger, solar shading and natural ventilation combined with individual controls, and sustainable and non-toxic materials in the facade and interiors.
The Customer Centre, at the east end of the project, is a dramatic culmination of the building‘s movements with breathtaking views of Oslofjord and the city of Oslo. The new headquarters is both the cultural and commercial heart of the company. The workplace is not only functional, it is also meaningful. The building itself inspires employees to do their best, motivating the workforce to build performance for the company.
