This important government commission, received as a result of an architectural competition, required a particularly sensitive design approach in view of Hong Kong‘s prominence on the world stage and [he significance of the building, which represents Great Britain’s continued interest when Hong Kong becomes a special administration region of China in 1997.
The new headquarters will provide accommodation for both the British Consulate and the British Council on a site adjacent to the new Hong Kong Park. Two perimeter buildings are linked by a common entrance pavilion. The two main buildings have their own position and identity with contemplative views onto the private, secluded gardens, and a long public frontage. The consistent 10-storey roof-line echoes Hong Kong public buildings of the past. Local climatic conditions prompted the use of passive solar control through brise-solcils and other devices.
